Our Model
The assisted living industry in North Carolina is only about 50 years old. It began with the opening of the original "county homes" housing two or more residents as early as the 1950s. These county homes operated with minimal regulation or licensure until the late 1960’s when the state implemented more formal operational rules and regulations. Formal requirements for construction and staff credentialing were also established during this time. Many homes fell under the grandfather clause because they were built prior to the development of regulations and the regulatory body; the Division of Health Service Regulation. Shallotte Assisted Living phase one construction began in 1985 with the construction of the north wing 40 units. These units filled quickly and within a year phase two construction began with the addition of the south wing 40 units. Shallotte Assisted Living was the first licensed assisted living operation within Brunswick County.
The industry of assisted living has evolved over the years from a rest home/institutional healthcare-atmosphere to a residential home-like environment. It is due to these changes in the industry that our perspective of operation developed.
Our model of assisted living couples a residential home-like environment with community-based healthcare. Our residents enjoy seeing physicians and mental health professionals, as needed, in their own home, and have the peace of mind that needs are quickly met. Residents also have access to our community nurse who personalizes and oversees each individual plan for care. Our management team consists of licensed health professionals.
